Kura Taiao Tūwharetoa 2024

Kura Taiao Wānanga – Ngāti Tūwharetoa

Initiated by Poipoia and the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board

The Kura Taiao Wānanga is a groundbreaking initiative created by Poipoia in partnership with the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board under the umbrella of Project Kaitiaki. This kaupapa is designed to inspire and equip Ngāti Tūwharetoa whānau and hapū with the knowledge and tools to enhance their role as kaitiaki within their rohe.

The wānanga fosters a unique approach that weaves mātauranga Māori and Western science to create meaningful strategies for environmental stewardship. By connecting participants with experts in te taiao, the program strengthens Ngāti Tūwharetoa’s capacity to care for their whenua, wai, and taonga tuku iho.

Key Features of the Wānanga

  • Maramataka Māori: Understanding the lunar calendar and its environmental applications.

  • Whakapapa of Taiao: Exploring the genealogical connections between people and the environment.

  • Mahinga Kai: Sharing stories and practices of traditional food gathering and sustainability.

  • Environmental Advocacy: Fostering tino rangatiratanga in decision-making for resource management.

  • Innovation and Preservation: Blending modern tools with traditional practices for environmental care.

Recent Highlights

A Shared Vision

The partnership between Poipoia and the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board ensures that Ngāti Tūwharetoa’s aspirations for the environment are upheld while fostering collaboration with regional and national stakeholders.
